Everyone is talking about superfoods and their benefits for nutrition and skin. What are they and how to make the most of them in our skincare? Let’s find out.

What are superfoods

Superfoods are foods full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients in an above average quantity compared to normal food. Inside them we can also find vitamins such A, E, C and flavonoid, strong antioxidants active meant to fight free radicals. Like they have a positive impact on our organism, they can also be really important for our skincare.

There are many superfoo and, although they all have different features,  they have a few properties in common such as:

  • antiinflammatory
  • antioxidant
  • energizing
  • nourishing

The most common used in cosmetics are spirulina algae, avocado and papaya.

Properties and benefit of Spirulina

Spirulina is a green-bluish algae, so called for its spiral form. It’s extra cosmetic benefits are useful for students and athletes: it’s a strong energiser, full of vitamins and minerals like magnesium, potassium, manganese and studies also confirm its ability to bring more resistance in the muscles. It has benefits for the immunity system, making it stronger and giving it energy, and has also anti inflammatory and detox proprietes that helps to control sugar level in blood, colesterol LDL and triglyceride.

For its properties is a perfect ingredient for all skin types, especially dull and dry skin that needs to be brightened, detoxified with a super dose of antioxidants that only spirulina can give! We can find it in face masks and scrubs.

Properties and benefits of avocado

Avocado is one of the most known and loved superfoods of all time: it’s full of omega 3, proteins, vitamins like A, D, E and K and all the vitamins of the B group. It has antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, and protects the immune system from external aggression. It also has oleic acid, which brings an important soothing effect on the skin.

In cosmetics, its pulp is used and an oil is extracted, which also maximizes its nourishing and moisturizing properties. This makes the avocado a perfect superfood for dry and sensitive skin, but also dry and normal combination skin that needs a boost of nourishment and antioxidants.

Properties and benefit of papaya

Papaya is one of the most loved superfoods or superfruits when it comes to food and recently also in the cosmetic world. It is known for its cleansing, purifying, anti-aging and decongestant effects.

Papaya’s enzyme, papain, is at the base of the enzymatic scrubs on the market succeeding in giving a bright complexion without attacking it, even soothing pre-existing irritations.

Contains a rich amount of vitamins A, C, E and K and elements like magnesium, zinc, iron . In addition, the flavonides contained within it make it a perfect antioxidant active, to fight the signs of aging and the production of free radicals, keeping the skin toned and firm.
